Heads Will Roll: The Town They Prayed to Escape
The Halifax Gibbet is one of England's most brutal and fascinating medieval execution devices—yet surprisingly few people have ever heard of it. Long before the guillotine became infamous during the French Revolution, this fearsome machine stood in Halifax, West Yorkshire, enforcing one of the harshest laws in England. But why was this Yorkshire town so feared that people prayed, "From Hell, Hull and Halifax, Good Lord deliver us"?
In this documentary, we uncover the true story of the Halifax Gibbet, the infamous Gibbet Law, the medieval wool trade that made Halifax wealthy, the executions that shocked England, and the legends that still surround the town today. Along the way, we'll visit the original execution site, the replica Halifax Gibbet, and Bankfield Museum to see the original gibbet blade and discover the real stories behind one of Britain's darkest chapters of history.
A huge thank you to everyone at Bankfield Museum for their help with this documentary, and especially to Curator Eli Dawson for generously sharing his knowledge and helping bring this remarkable piece of Yorkshire history to life.
